Cornell Catering Team
Daniel Carroll - School of Hotel Administration, Class of 2017
Working with Cornell Catering as a server, bartender and eventually student manager while I was pursuing my hotel degree at SHA gave me the opportunity to build the fundamental skills I use to this day in my career in hotel group sales with Hilton Worldwide. From the complex execution of the yearly service awards event with hundreds of guests, to assisting in beverage training with our bartenders, and having all of my ideas and creativity encouraged along the way, I was able to transition after graduation right into the hospitality industry and have real-world experience to guide me in the sale of group event programs. My experience with Cornell Catering not only gave me knowledge for the future, but also credible examples of myself as a manager during the interview period of my senior year. As a direct result of my Cornell Catering experience, I walked at graduation with a job offer from The Ritz-Carlton in their Meetings & Events division
April Gillis - College of Arts & Sciences, Class of 2016
Being part of the Cornell Catering team while a student at Cornell was a really rewarding experience. As a Student Manager, I learned skills essential to event planning, catering, and customer service more broadly: adaptability, creative problem-solving, and team management in dynamic environments. Each event was unique, which meant a wide range of opportunities and experiences—something I really enjoyed. It didn’t hurt that I got to work with such fun and supportive colleagues, too!
Danielle Reed - College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, Class of 2018
I worked for Cornell Catering throughout my tenure at Cornell, starting as a freshman. While sometimes the hours were long, the work itself was never boring. As a part of the catering team, I got to set up, visit, and work in some beautiful parts of Cornell, including the Johnson Museum, and Martha Van Rensalear Hall. Everyone I worked with was wonderful, from fellow students, to the chefs, to the management team. I loved showing up to a shift a bit early, and getting to chat with Brad or Margaret, or Natasha, and share a little bit about what was going on in our lives. From working at Cornell Catering, I learned that I wanted to go into event planning/management, which I did as soon as I graduated! My time as first a server, then a student manager, set me up for success as an Event Manager for luxury hotel companies, including Fairmont and St. Regis. I look back fondly on my time with Cornell Catering, and hope other students have the chance to enjoy themselves as I did!
